Multiplexed fluorescent biosensors to profile infectious diseases

We will build a novel sensing toolbox alongside suitable analytical tools to image biomarkers of cell function in real time. We will prepare a new platform of multiplexed photonic biosensors that will be able to image pathogens (bacteria, virus) in infection models of increasing complexity. We will optimise the sensors in cell cultures and validate selected sensors for bioimaging in different fluorescence-based imaging modalities, from super-resolution microscopy, FLIM and hyperspectral imaging. We will prepare for commercial readiness of the selected biosensors together with Tocris enabling us to move this technology into new commercial assets. Our main aim is to develop a collection of biomarkers to characterise photonic signatures of cellular function and translate them into a decision-making tool for sensing of infectious diseases, including multi-drug resistance.

We expect that the student will be trained by the supervisory team on the following:

  • Development of a platform of multiplexable
  • Analytical tools including data mining skills and
  • Optical fingerprinting of fluorescent biosensors using different modalities, from super-resolution to
  • Cell culture and fluorescence microscopy in live
  • Participation in the development of marketing strategy through competitive landscape and future emerging
  • Study IP landscape and freedom to Secure emerging IP, including paper and patent writing.
