Photonics Hackathon

As part of SUSSP Sensing and Spectroscopy, we were pleased to introduce our first ever Photonics Hackathon. This 12-hour event challenged delegates to design and build a spectrometer that could reliably tell the difference between different types of liquid. Delegates were split into groups of 6-7 with a variety of experience levels, provided with a selection of identical equipment plus the use of ‘Bill’s Bargain Bazaar’ a library of additional resources to help build their spectrometers.

Delegates demonstrated their teamwork skills and drew upon their varied range of technical experience to devise their spectrometers. Judges were particularly impressed by the creativity and individuality of design of each spectrometer which was distinctive and whimsical in each group.

At the end of the day, teams were invited to present their spectrometers and demonstrate their operation. The judging panel were made up of our invited speakers and coordinators of the CDT programme.

The winning team was made up of Ruridh Smith, Snigdha Thekke Thalakkal, Victor Junco Muller, Cosmin Suciu, Danielle Clarke, Will Gash and Natasha Crossley. The prize was a very special bottle of Whisky donated by Alan Miller on behalf of SUPA.
