We are excited to be able to announce that the CDT Applied Photonics has been awarded with funding from the UK Research Council (EPSRC) to support a further 5 cohorts of studentships, commencing in September 2024.

The CDT in Applied Photonics has established a track record of working in partnership with industry, with the majority of our students embedded in the industrial setting and all working on industry inspired research projects.  Responding to current industry needs, the centre will support EngD and PhD research in the area of ‘use-inspired’ photonic sensors and metrology, and we are pleased to welcome the University of Huddersfield, and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to the existing consortium of Heriot-Watt University (lead) and the universities of Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and Strathclyde.

The funding, around £6M plus contributions from industry, will fund 55 studentships and is a major commitment to the development of the photonics workforce.  In return for this investment, our graduates make an impact across a range of industrial sectors.

Prof. Derryck Reid, CDT Deputy Director and PI commented “The commitment of the CDT staff, students, supervisors and Industrial partners is what makes our CDT special and has secured its continuation for another 5 years.”

To read more of the successes of our Alumni why not have a look at our most recent centre Annual Report.
