The launch event for the new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Applied Photonics took place on 27 March 2019, at Heriot-Watt University.
The event outlined the new strategic focus for the CDT, Photonic Imaging, Sensing and Analysis with strong industry support. The new focus encompasses technologies which are transforming modern life, from self-driving cars (lidar) and smartphone interfaces (laser gesture-recognition) to smart buildings (distributed fibre and LED sensors) and bio-imaging (super-resolution microscopy).
The Centre also welcomed the University of Edinburgh to the existing partners of Heriot-Watt University (lead) and the universities of Dundee, Glasgow, St Andrews and Strathclyde. Our new funding allows us to sustain the Centre, which has been running since 2001, until February 2028.
Our speakers included alumni, current CDT students and industrial sponsor who gave inspiring talks on their involvement with our CDT.
